CRG participates in the third United Nations Ocean Conference
Alejandro Maass, a principal investigator at the Millennium Institute Center for Genome Regulation (CRG), participated in the third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France. The meeting brought together more than 10,000 participants, including heads of state, diplomats, scientists and ocean advocates.
Maass, who also participates in the international TARA Oceans initiative, joined the Chilean delegation alongside Camila Fernández, director of the COPAS centre, and Alex Godoy, an academic and sustainability specialist. All three researchers are members of the Ministry of Science’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Climate Change (C4), representing Chile in different sessions of this global conference.
During the session devoted to the importance of plankton for biodiversity, Alejandro Maass emphasised the crucial role of microdiversity in studying and analysing the oceans. He highlighted how these organisms, invisible to the naked eye, are essential for understanding ecological balances, biogeochemical cycles and the effects of climate change.
CRG’s presence at this international meeting reinforces the institute’s commitment to frontier scientific research and international collaboration to address the challenges threatening the oceans and the planet’s biodiversity.
